1. This derogatory term is used in reference to a former ally, someone that these Americans formerly fought with against the Germans. Therefore it is ironic that Americans are making derogatory remarks toward their former allies.

2. It disrupts the flow of the entire story line, though it may, in reflection of some of the changes going on in regard to Italians be a view given us of America during the time period as opposed to Europe.

3. It seems to me, with the eventual outcome of the character in jail, that the author is trying to say something along the lines of if you try spreading your believes to people who want nothing to do with them, people will grow annoyed. Or basically don't go trying to convert everyone, because you'd be annoying.

4. Bullfighting has often been seen as an honorable practice, as well as one that proves manliness. Thus the matadors are made into something extremely brave for fighting these bulls.

5. War and masculinity have always been grouped together, it also serves the purpose of contrasting the praying soldier in the before vignette to the fearless bull fighter, though the horror and terrible problems of war are portrayed by the matador throwing up.

6. Hubert's lack of masculinity leads to them being unable to have a child.

7. Apparently the lack of masculinity and ability to have a baby makes Cornelia extremely sad, as she spends much of the intervening time crying.

8. World War I destroyed several Kingdoms, one of the major ones being Tsar Russia and the Ottoman Empire, the king in this reference also looses much of his power, he has to labor for his drink, an lives more like a normal man than a king.

9. The American way of having fun is shown as gaining material goods as too make up for happiness. As the Italians like to go vacationing.

10. She could not find the cat that the Italian maid told her about. So absence of cat makes her unhappy.

1. In the vignette, the author show that there is some prejudging going on in America, through using derogatory term "wop".
2.The author chooses to place the setting in America in this vignette, whereas the previous were in Europe because he wants to confuse the readers and also trying to say that even though the war is being fought over across the ocean in Europe, the soldiers still bring the war with them when they come back home to America.
3. That even though the war is officailly over, the communist want to start a revolution and believe that its going to start in Italy. It seems that the war brought more internal problems within every country.
4. The main aspect showing manliness is the sport or activity of bullfighting which really show the matadors manliness by killing a beast that can represent the masculine sex.
5. Hemingway included this chapter to show that some that because the war is over with the men wanting to show the manliness and bullfighting is a great alternative for the males to show there bravery and manliness to the others.
6. Hubert Elliots show a lack of masculinity through him not having casual sex with many women and being a virgin until marriage and also having some trouble making and suceeding of having a baby.
7. The effects of him not being very masculine he does not make his wife very happy and therefore the wifes friend come over to make her happy.
8. The bullfighting is a metaphor to the war because the horse acts like the soldier because its the one suffering from all the injuries and the generals are the ones on top of the horse, always making the horse charge anyways. And this both bloody fights are very dangerous and horror.
9. The contrast between the Italians and the Americans are that the Americans just stay inside to be safe and read, and in the other hand we have the Italians going outside to celebrate. And also how the American also go for the material to approach happiness and the Italian go outside to socialize.
10. She is unhappy because she is bored inside and not having any material and not having fun. Also because they both have a lack of intimacy.

chap. VIII
1. that people discriminate other races. whenever the event happened, obviously the people who hit the wagon didn't care about "wops" even though they are as much a human being as anybody else.

2. Because maybe he wants to deliver a message that in America these kind of things happen the most. In Europe, most countries aren't as diverse as the United States.

The Revolutionist
3. That people are the same and that their is always a way to help. Unlike the "wop" incident, this story shows different people coming together to help each other.

4. Most men dont cry or show pain. They show that they can take pain and be a "man" about it. Here, even when a man is badly injured, he tries to shrug it off and keep going.

5. Because people in the crowd disapprove of the ending of the fight, so they show it. In the ring, when they don't want to quit, it can be compared to soldiers. I think maybe the author still talks about the war, but in a different way, but with the same message. People disapprove of the war, just like the fight, and soldiers have to feel manly.

Mr. and Mrs. Elliot
6. Because most men by the age of 25 have already slept with a woman, and Hubert hasn't.

7. They can't have a baby, and he starts to not spend as much time with her, and this can create problems for their marriage in the future.

Chap. X

8. Because Generals in the army never care about how a soldier feels, he sees them as a walking weapon for success. Even when injured, the General can ride his way to victory and take all responsiblity, never sharing glory with the soldiers, like a picador and his horse. The horse is never mentioned, but a picador's skill is.

Cat in the Rain

9. The American woman wants the cat to be happy, but the italian maid does not understand her at all. They don't know how a cat can make u happy. But after a while, the Italian man understood, and even though he may have wondered how on earth this could make her happy, he sends the cat to her room.

10. Because she is probably told what to do. She wants her hair long, and her husband doesn't, she wants a cat, and her husband doesn't seem to care. It seems that she cannot be herself because of her husband, and this can make you unhappy.

Ted

1. By using wop, it shows that, even post-war, there's still tension between people
2. because america technically wasn't attacked yet all the men who were are going there
3. beliefs and ideals can lead to strife but they can also share good things to others
4. the bullfighting is chosen on, because it's bulls, and bulls are crazy things
5. because the war could have been just one big attempt to show how manly each nation was
6. he and his wife can't have any kids, most chicks don't like him and he's a poet
7. she's detached from him because of his lack of MANLEENESS!!
8. because the fighting is seemingly pointless when the managers are just watching them fight
9. americans are more item-oriented whereas the italians want to honor what happened
10. because her husband won't let her have fun
