1. they played "safe in the arms of jesus".

Chapter 9:
1. The Elks band plays "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" at Joe's funeral.
2. Janie is satisfied to go on with life as usual, because there are no more problems, now that Joe wasn't around to criticize her.
3. During the evenings, Janie sits on the porch and listens.
4. Janie considers leaving and going to find her mother.
5. Joe hadn't even been dead a month when Ike Green tells Janie to be careful about who she marries.
6. To get rid of Ike, Janie pretends she is going home, then goes back to the store when he leaves.
7. Janie wears black for six months.
8. Hezekiah took up smoking cigars, biting them in the side of his mouth, started leaning back in Joe's chair, and using Joe's favorite expression to be more like Joe.
9. Many suitors arose when Janie started wearing white.
10. A Sanford undertaker pressures Phoeby to introduce him to Janie.
Chapter 10:
1. Tea Cake comes into the store at 5:30.
2. Tea Cake buys a pack of Camel cigarettes.
3. Janie says that she cherishes checkers, but then turns around and says that she wouldn't know because she's never played.
4. Janie gets frustrated when Tea Cake goes to take her king, which she neglected to protect.
5. Tea Cake plans to wait for a car to take him home, and if it never comes, to walk the seven miles back.
6. Tea Cake doesn't tell Janie his name until he is asked because he didn't think it'd be needed.
7. When Janie hears Tea Cake's nickname, she jokes, "Tea Cake! You so sweet as all dat?"
8. Knuckle pudding is a beating with the fist.
9. Janie calls Mr. Woods "Tea Cake," because it's more friendly than "Mr. Woods" or "Mr. Tea Cake."
10. After Tea Cake leaves, Janie watches the moon rise from the porch.
