Chapter 7
1. Janie got nothing from Jody except what money could buy.
2.Janie is seeing her body working at the store with Jody but her mind and soul is elsewhere, under a shady tree.
3. Joe tells Janie to stop playing croquet because he says that is for young folks, implying that Janie is old.
4. Joe looks older because his prosperous looking belly now sagged like a load and his eyes are a little absent.
5. Janie accidently cut Steve Mixon's tobacco wrong.
6. The people stopped laughing at Joe's insult of Janie's body because it got pitiful if you thought about it for a while.
7. According to Janie, Joe has "mixed up" her doings with her looks.
8. Joe uses the fact that no one wants Janie for a wife anymore as means of fulfillment.

Chapter 8
1. After the fight, Joe sleeps in a room downstairs.
2. It means that if Janie has no other option than to live with Jody under these conditions than she must do so.
3. Old Lady Davis is cooking and cleaning for Joe.
4. Phoeby advises Janie to get a real doctor to examine Jody.
5. Phoeby knows that the medicine man is a phony.
6. Joe's kidneys are experiencing a collapse in fuctioning.
7. "Death is a strange being with the huge square toes who lived in the West. The great one who lived in the straight house like a platform without sides to it, and without a roof...He stands in his high house that overlooks the world."
8. Originally Janie was looking for comfort, care, and love in her relationship with Joe.
9. Janie has gained a sense of importance and independance from her relationship with Joe.

4. she says make out like you dont notice it.
5. that he's a trashy nigger that calls himself a two headed doctor.
6. his kidneys arent working any more.
7. that strange being with the huge square toes who lived way in the west.
8. she was looking for a loving relationship and a better life.
9. she lost her age but she has grown into a handsome woman.

Chapter 7:

1. Janie "got nothing from Jody except what money could buy."

2. The first paragraph on page 77 illustrates how Janie, while tending to her daily chores, imagines herself "under a shady tree."

3. Joe tells Janie to stop playing croquet because croquet is "for de young folks," and she isn't so young anymore.

4. Joe looks older because he is beginning to slump when he walks, his neck is stiff, and his belly is beginning to sag.

5. In the store, Janie cuts Steve Mixons tobacco plug wrong.

6. After a second of laughter, the people realize how pitiful and cheap Joe's shot at Janie's looks was, and stop laughing about it.

7. Janie says that Joe is mixing her doings with her looks, and insulting them both unnecassarily.

Chapter 8:

1. After the fight, Joe sleeps in a room downstairs.

3. When Joe refuses to let Janie care for him, Phoeby takes care of him.

4. Pheoby tells Janie to just ingnore the rumor that she is poisoning Joe and not respond.

5. Pheoby tells Janie that the medicine man who started the rumor is a crook, coming up with scam after scam.

6. The doctor from Orlando says that Joe's kidneys have failed.

7. "Death" has huge square toes, and lives in a house in the West with no walls and no roof, looking over the world.

8. Originally, Janie wanted to "keep house wid [Joe] in uh wondeful way."
