Summer School: Semester 1 Final-Short Answer

Answer the following questions fully and completely, using your best writing skills. Each question should be answered using at least one full paragraph, but you might need to write more to answer the question fully.

1. The author of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain, presents to the reader several examples of societies failings. Rather than dealing with these problems using a serious tone, Twain instead satirizes the issues. Why does he choose to use humor to address these issues?

2. Is Huck a moral character? Why, or why not? What is Twains view of morality as it is practiced by our society?

3. How is Huck a representation of the young United States?

4. What seems to be Twain's main message to us, his American readers?

1.
Mark Twain chooses to use satire instead of a direct attack because it is more likely to be effective. Most people, when attacked directly, will become defensive and refuse to look at issues from a rational, objective point of view. By using humer and satire, Twain is able to ridicule social problems with more impunity.

2.
Huck is a character who discovers morality for himself. As Twain makes clear, society has failed to teach Huck conventional morality. But Twain also thinks that the conventional morality of society is often flawed. For this reason, he has Huck discover his own morality for himself throughout the course of the novel.

3.
Like Huck, the United States had to discover morality for itself, in an increasingly strange and cruel world. The international society, so to speak, had failed to set a standard of true morality which nations could measure themselves by. In this respect, Huck's growth and development directly parallels that of the U.S.

4.
Twain's main message seems to be that we should be aware of the intolerance, alcoholism, and other problems in our society. He encourages education, though not at the expense of common sense. Most of all, Twain wants people to do what is morally right.

1._Well i think that Mark twain uses satire in his because he wants to make this novel more interresting and make it more like an aventure, also to make readers read it all and not get bore wild they are reading it.
2._I think that huck is not a moral character because he is a troble maker and he is a children that live's in the street and dont go to school. That you dont need morality to get wher you want to be and to be happy.
3._Well huck is a young representation of the U.S because he wants freedom.
4._That slavery, coruption, violence, midia etc. is not good in no place

1.) The reason Mark Twain uses humor is because if he points it out directly many people would take it very offensive, and it would make people very angry.

2.) I think Huck is a moral character because even though the widow douglas wants to change him he still wants to be a kid. The reason i think Huck is moral is when he tells jim that he is going to be free and see his family. Mark Twain makes fun of morality in a way of saying that people never change and they only can about them selves.

3.) Huck is like a young united states because even though the widow douglas is trying to mold him to be moral and nice he still wants to be a kid and get dirty once in a while.

4.) Mark Twains message is people never change and they will always make the same mistakes that people will do in the past or future. Thats what Mark Twain is trying to tell us.

1-In The novel of Huckeberry Finn the author Mark Twain uses a humorous way to list the issues so it could be better explained or especified the problems or the issues his trying to tell us also because it was the the better way to adress this types of Issues and it could createa better tone for the noevel it makes it interesting.
2-I think that Huck was not a moral character because of the several things he does like when he doesn't want to learn manners, when he runs away from Ms. watson or when he was with his gang and I think this is not what a moralperson does.
The view of morality by Mark twain in this novel is not a very good view because there is racism, violence, addiction's and other stuff that have nothing to do with morality.
4-Huck is now a representation of the united states because there is many young people who act like Huck or even like his father pap there are several people that would reflect their selfes in this novel and it help us understand how important is to get an education and good manners.
5-Mark Twain's message in this novel I think that mainly is to learn manners to take a advantage of the education that we are getting and also to get along with other types of person maybe from other country or different culture or color and that it is important to learn a little of everything in order to have a good life.It also gives a really important message to the parents and it is that they should pay more attention to their kids rather than giving more attention to their addiction like Pap did.

1.he uses humer so the reader will have more fun reading it and stilll under stand what he is talking about. they will under stand it but in a fun way readers hear about this all the time why do they want to read a book about things that they allready know.Thats why he makes it diffrent then just talking about it.

2.Huck he is just a normal guy that just happens to meet a guy that is way diffrent then him. But some way he starts to under stand jim and they become friends so now he does have moriols.

3.He is just like the other usa people but he learns to like jim. Huck under stands jim and what he is going through.

4.I think his main message is that today and back in the day we have problems and we dont know how to deal with them because things havent changed from way back some have but not all of them.So he trying to tell us through his chracters how we have problems.

1.I believe Huck is a moral character but he sometimes seem to question himself about the things he is doing.Mark Twain seems to show that people back then in those days didn't really focused on their morals. They were too busy doing other things.
2.Huck is a representation of the young america because he has an adventurous soul and likes to take risks and believe in his heart. Although sometimes he doubts his own heart. He also seems to be very aware of things all around him.
3.In my eyes i believe Mark Twain is trying to show us the readers that we need to be more focused on our own issues as in being able to accept things the way they are. As for the Government and all of that I think he is saying they should focus more on what is going on in this country and take care of the people here who need help such as the homeless, education, violence, and poverty too. They should look at themselves before they try to change the rest of the world.

1.I believe that Mark Twain decides to use humor to adress some issues because he believes that no one is intrested in the topics.I also believe that Mark Twain believes that no person is going to listen to his thoughts.I think that the biggest rason for making the topics look humerous is because we people make fun of things that are wrong and not help at all.
2.I believe that Huck is a moral character. I believe this because Huck deals with everything in the story no matter if it is good or bad. Also Huck would always find a solution even if the solution was wrong or correct. Also Huck expreeses al his ideas no matter what they are. The biggest reason why I think he is moral is because throught the novel Huckleberry Finn shows knoweledge. Huck shows this by helping Jim and sticking with him until the end.
3.Huck shows that he is a young reprensentation of the United States. Huck shows this in various situations.First Huck doesn't like no one to tell him things. This still occurs today.Secondly a lot of young americans don't know what they want just like Huck, but later mature as time goes by.Also I believe that Huck represents Young Americans because he deals with a lot of problemds just like in America.
4.Well I am not sure of what thwe main message Mark Twain is sending, but I do know that he expresses himself loud and clear. The fist message I think is segregation because believe it or not it still occurs today. Secondly Mark is saying that we americands don't care too much for our education because today some people are making bad choices. The Last message he is trying to give is that we people make fun of problems instead of helping and we stay behind.

1. The reason Mark Twain decides to sattire the social issues in the novel is probably because he likes to make fun of the issue. I think that if Twain were to use a serious tone the book wouldnt be as interesting. The book woulf be exteremly boring because people hear about these issues all the time and no one does anything about them. So because he used sattire people were able to see how ridiculous these issues really are.
2. In my opinion, Huck does show some sense of morality in the novel. Twains vies on morality is very different than what I am used to. He was able to show everyone's morals. Huck's morals are in some way the same kind of morals teens use today. Teens like freedom and doing what they want, same as Huck.
3. HUck is a representation of young United States in the fact that he wants freedom and got away from Pap who was not allowing him to be free and independant. Just the way England controled the U.S. and how the U.S. was able to get it's independance.
4. Twains main message was to get readers to see the different issues that are going on in the world. He was able to show the readers how people don't like being told what to do. They like being bosses of them self. He showed how people seek freedom and how they can be happy being around the people they love the most even if they are not your family.

1)mark twain chooses to poke fun of these issues because of how inmorral people were and still are till this day. Of abolishing a race just because of their skin tone and the way they look, that is just wrong and bad. but most people just followed the other person just because it was the thing to do. Either you were against the blacks or you were with them. they far enough that the lynched them! just because of there race vthat i belive is a all time low for are american history.

2)yes i belive huck is a moral person because he had heart and soul for jim or else he would have turned him in along time ago when he found out he was a run away slave. but he did double think about turning him because of the thing that he is with a runn away slave! but in his heart he know how it felt to be treated like a dog and to be hit for absolatly no reason. he didnt want him to go through that pain any longer if he wasnt going to go through it.

3)huck is a represent ment of the united states back in the days because most of the american children were either being wild and ludicris or going to school and being whipped by there parents. huck choose to break free from those chains of bruttality and unconditional love from his father and widow douglas.

4) mark twains main message in this novel i belive is that dont be stupid and dont treat other races bad or crool just on how they look. love them and treat them like if they were one of youre own show them more love then you would show your own self. another reason i belive he wrote this book is that to poke fun of the (system) or the government how the government is soo corupted and thats how it is today with fake polititions running our country. that dont know jack squat how it is to be one of the lower class who've never spent a day in the streets....

1) he chooses to humor this topic of racism in the book so when people read the book they dont look at mark twain as a racist author.
2) no i dont consider huck finn a moral becasue as a young kid he lies and he runs away from his gaurdians to get a african american free, which was illegal back then to help free some one.
3) he can be represented as the young united states because he travels through u.s as young boy who tries to help out a friend, to make him become a free man.

1) I think that Mark Twain satirizes the situation because it was common for people to take racism lightly. He lightly pokes fun at certain situations becasue there is no one there to tell him he's wrong.

2) Yes, Huck is a moral character. He is always loyal. He allways sticks up for his friends. For example, when Huck realized that he helped free a slave. It was considered immoral in his society, but a civilized human being would think that it was absolutely moral.

Mark Twain views morality as a way of life. People are raised the way they are raised. If everyone in the community hates African Americans, then the kids growing up are bound to share the same hatred.

3) Huck represents the yound U.S in a few ways. He is proud to be who he is, he will fight for what he believes in, and always has a good conscience. The biggest way is that he symbolizes, the beggining of interacial relation ships, acceptance, an end to segregation and the beginning of freedom.

4) Mark Twains message to me is that, everything is going to be alright. Acceptance of differents races is going to slowly but surely develop into something great; and one could always have hope.

1.Mark Twain chooses to use humor and satire to state his point on racism, alchoholism and other issues addressed in the novel. He does this because it is a more effective method of stating his message, than to just state it directly. It makes people realize the problems more by exageration and humor, rather than just saying that there is problems in society, since everyone is already aware of that.

2.In my opinion, Huck is a moral character. In the novel there are situations where Huck feels miserable because he was friends a run-away slave. this made Huck uneasy, but he knew that it was the right thing to do to help him, even though at times he felt like he should turn him in.

3.Huck represents the youth of the united states because in the novel there are many representations of violence and gangs. this is still an issue today with youth and society. Huck and tom start a fake gang that was focused strictly on violence, murder and robbery. Although Huck is not a bad kid, he still represents the youth of the United States.

4.Twains main message is that there are many problems in society, and they have not changed much in the course of history. many problems that are in the novel are still present to this day. violence, drug addictions and forms of slavery are still problems in society, and Twain made sure that us readers aknowledge that fact.

Mark Twain use humor to address the issue for the purpose of not making the novel into a all hatred racism book that it would be view. The whole idea of humor is poking fun at it anout how fuuny the time of the issue was. The moral of the story is Huck because as everything is going on he is the owe one in the story heeping a mind of his freedom. He is the moral because lots of action has happen to him in his jounary to being freedom which most of the character have gone through. The morality in our society would be that we have this fluish notion that everything in this world is perfect and that evergything shpould remain the same. Huck should be view as the image of the young United State when it had it morality of freedom for all and justice to do something about it like what Huck is doing fopr Jim trying to lead him to freedom. Huck represent of the yound U.S. because Huck was the quality that show for the age that he is in quitly undersatand world that he is for he trys to free Jim from prisonment to show him freedom. Twain's message to the American reader would be that as time passes the issue of the past would be repeated in a infor for the current time. The issue have to be attend before the chaos of the problem which is brough be spead and influence other. As we have the insacene of what makes us human truth we will not be able to have the morality that Huck is showed through the book the we lost as human being and the respect for the equality for eaqch other.

1. The reason Twain uses satire to deal with these social failties is because people have tried to make the people see there areas that need fixing and nothing has been done yet. So instead he uses satire to make fun of these social issues to try to make the reader see how ridiculous these problems are, it also makes a good novel.
2. Huck in some ways is a moral charater. His morals are basically the same as the morals of most teens now a day. His morals are going to school even though it wasn't for very long, and getting his freedom.
3. Huck represents young United States by the way how he gets his independence from Pap. The way Unites States got it's independance from England.
4. Twains main message was that no situation is perfect and in order to make it perfect you have to do it. The way Huck was unhappy with the Widow Douglas and Pap.
Even though that was his family, he instead found happiness with people who were also in need of happiness.

1.)I believe that Twain uses humor, rather than a serious tone, to adress social problems because maybe he wrote this book in like the 1800's, I believe, and things were different back then. People saw slavery as a normal thing. White supremacy was what everybody believed in. So, if Twain would use a more serious tone, he might had gotten in deep trouble, or he wouldn't have made the reader deeply think about how serious these isuues were. He wanted the reader to think deeply and not just tell them that this and this was wrong, but wanted them to figure it out themselves. So, to get his point and perspective across, he used a humorous tone for his book.

2.)I believe that Huck is a moral character because he, to me, shows what a person nowadays may lack at times. He follows his instinct and knows when he is doing wrong and when he does things that may seem bad to society, it is most of the time the right thing. An example f this action is when he helps Jim escape. Jim is a black slave and according to the society, blacjs are supposed to be slaves and not have the same rights that a white man. A black person is not a person, but a servant and inferior to a white person, and therefor, cannot obtain freedom. So, when Huck helps Jim escape, he struggles with himself because he knows that society views helping a black is against the morals set by society, but then he knows that no person, black, white, or any ethnicity should be denied their rights of liberty, he follows his guts. He follows the real morals and values, not the ones that society has made up. Like Huck, Twain has his own views of morality.
Probably, Twain thiks that society does not practice its morals too much even though we have set them. It teaches them, but when it comes to practicing them, there is not that much action.
3.)Huck may be arepresentation as young America maybe as being knowledgable, but as soon as we grow up, we tend to lose what we have learned and exchange it with what others think.Twain's message to us might be to look around us and see how we live our lives. To see if we ive our lives according to what we know it should be or if we, or our lives controled by society.

1. Mark Twain wrote about serious issued is the novel, and he used humor to adress them so the reader would take it more lightly.

2. I think that Huck is a moral character because he does what he feels he should do and what he feels is right.

3. Huck is a representation of the young U.S. because he a tipical boy going through all the social issues of that era.

4.Twain's message is to live your life as you feel you should live your life.

1)Mark Twain saterizes this novel because if it would have been written without any humor the book would've been boring. Not only one issue is being saterized, but many. The way each issue is being used is attracted to each reader and does not make the book be boring. He used a various of ways to make this book interesting.

2) Their are kids that steal and do many other stuff and they are well educated, but Huck doesn't know about morals. He doesn't think that robbery is a crime because he wasn't tought that. So I can't say if he is moral or not.

3)Huck represents equallity.Twains message is that peaple are all equal even if their different colors. He tries to tell his audience that racism is not a good thing.

1. Mark Twain uses humor to address these issues because he wants to exagerate the issue. He pokes fun at society and the way it work. For example how he satirizes slavery, he has jim the slave run away with a young whit boy on a river and they become good friends. He wanted to show a different side to all the issues that were happening. You would have never seen or maybe even still see a young white boy on a raft with a black man all alone and that is how Mark Twain satirizes socitey and the issues that come with it.

2. I think Huck is a moral character. I think he really does what he believes is right. He doesnt quite follow the rules or the laws but he follows his heart. Like when he had the chance to rat Jim out and turn him in, he didnt because he realised how much freedom meant to Jim and he did what he thought was right even if it wasn't doing what he should of done in other peoples eyes. Mark Twain seems to show two different views on morality, what is right to you and what is right in society. It wasnt't morally corect for Huck to help a slave run away but he did ot because Jim needed help was a good person and was eventually hucks friend its was right to huck and thats all that matterd.

3. HUck is a representation of the young United states because in the story he is basiclly what young america is all about. He is in a gang with Tom, he steals, He lies but hes also still a kid with imagination and youth. Kids still today are in gangs steal, lie and all that good stuff. He also suffers with the issue of religion, he doesnt really know what to believe in other then what he is told and still today kids and teens argue and are confused about religion and what to believe in.

4. Twains main message in this novel and to us the readers is to show us how not so smart America can be. He challenge relegion, abuse, violence, slavery, alcohol, and addiction. He wants to point out how violence is not the best thing to result to he points out the depth of slavery but writting about a slave as the good guy. Pap is an abusive father and an alcoholic and that brings up the point of alcohlism, and the temperence act. All together it seemed like Mark Twain wanted to give us,America, a good wake up call.

1)In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain chose to satirize the problems in our society because it adresses the problems yet making the book enjoyable to the reader. Using his method of satirizism, it effectively directs the readers attention to those issuse and influecnces fealings on the influences.
2)Huck is a moral character because Huck is against turning in Jim and doing the right thing. Hck also doesn't want to cause anyone pain, like when he ran away from Widow Duglas.
3)Huck is shown as the next generation of Americans by having fealings for abolition. Huck doesn't want to cause anyone pain and to anyone. Then the last thing is that Huck will do the right thing at any cost.
4)His message is for everyone to do the right thing and be curteous to others

1. The reason he used satire in the novel is because if he did not have anything humorous in the novel it would just be a book on things that he thinks are wrong with society at that point in time. He wanted to create something that had a funny story and have everything that he wanted to say about america in it, just symbolized. Mark Twain himself was someone who was more interested in comical novels so he wanted something that he himself would read. He wanted to make it interesting for everyone that read it.

2. Huck is a moral character because he ends up following his heart in the end by helping Jim run away, even though Jim was already free. He had mind games but he still followed what he believed was right and that is what makes him a moral character. Twain's view of morality is that you need to do whatever you feel is right, in no matter what it be, your job, making decisions about certain things that will affect you personally, or make a decision that will affect more than yourself, you need to do whatever you feel is right.

3. Huck is representation of the young United States in the fact that he were being torn about is slavery ok or not. He represents some people in the young U.S by being the little guy that everyone thinks that they know what the best thing for him is.

4. The main message Mark Twain is trying to show the reader is that this great country has a lot of problems in it that need to be fixed. It is a shame that most of those problems that he represents through symbols and characters in the novel still exist today in our bigger and supposedly better nation.

I think that Mark Twain uses humor to expecify the societies failings, because he wants to make his readers to be interested in the book of how he is satarizing it. He also satarizes the societies because eventhough that their has been a whole issue about it, their are many people this days that are racist, their is still many violence and also unequalization in education, and most of all addiction not only of alcohol, but of differnt drugs to.
For my opinion Huck is a moral character because he tries to help Jim escape from slavery. I think that Huck tries to help Jim escape from slavery because he doesn't like how their owners treat them and abuses them physically.
Huck represents a united states boy in the way that he wanted freedom for himself and also for Jim. Huck tried many ways to escape to the river with Jim, where it represented freedom for both of them.
I think that Twains message telling how in the past their was many issues that could be taken care of, and now days everything can.
For example their is no more slavery, racism, and now for people that have an addictio to alcohol their are many places to get help.

In the novel Mark Twain choose to satarize some social issues.I think he choose to satarize these issues like addictions, rasism, violence and religion because eventhough years pass it's funny how poeple don't change.Huck is very similar to the United States because teenagers right now also act like Huck. Many teenagers have relatives that are addictive to some kind of drugs. Some are beaten up by parents, they also see other poeple that are rasist eventhough they are not rasist. The most popular one is wanting to do whatever they want.Which that includes not being zivilized teenagers.Like Huck he felt better when he was alone on the river, that was his favorite place to be.Huck dindn't really enjoy being with the Widow and wanted wanted to be zivilized.

1.I believe that Mark Twain chose to use satire to adress societies fallings instead of adressing the issues using a serious tone because he wanted to get his point across to the reader while still entertaining. This way his book gets read by many people beacause it is a good novel and he spreads his message. Using a serious tone would have seemed more like a lecture than a story.

2.I would have to say that Huck is a moral character becuase he chooses to help Jim to freedom instead of turning him in for the reward money. Mark Twain's views on morality are basicly any one who does the right thing over what they want is a moral person.

3.Huck is like a young America because he to had to overcome an opresser, or his father, and become independant, but not without some help first.

4.Be cool. Stay in school(sorry, I don't know what his massage is.)
