Chapter 1

3.Mules and other brutes, yes, Hurston uses these animals as a metaphor

5.Men notice her firm buttocks, black hair, and pugnacious breasts while women notice her faded shirt and muddy overalls

7.“Tryin’ to soak some uh de tiredness and de dirt out amah feet”

10.Her black “rope” of hair metaphorically stands for her struggles and persistence in climbing the obstacles that face her. It could stand for race by utilizing the hardships of African- Americans in overcoming their challenges.
11.Hurston uses the metaphor in the last sentence to compare the“young darkness” to being “old” as the night wore on.

2.All the people saw her come because it was sundown and that is whn everybody went outside.
3.The porch sitter had done nothing all day long as if "brutes and mules embodied them" and now they begin to gossip. they are human but they are acting as if they are not.
4.The people remember how beautiful she was and how muh they had all envied her before she left.
5. As Janie walks down the street the men notice all of her beautiful body features and the women only notice her tattered clothes and muddy appearance. In short the men notice the good and the women notice the bad.
6.Phobe brings Janie a plate of mulatto rice for supper.
7.Janie is soaking her feet as Phobe walks in.
8.The residents want to be there so they can hear everything on judgement day.
9.She doesnt intend to tell the residents what happened but if Phobe ould like to then she gives her permission.
10.Her hair can stand for her beauty because you cannot compare it to others and also her race and her struggle to overcome obsacles.
11.the metaphor is that nothing can escape time, it will always make everything old.

Chapter 3
1. As the marriage approaches, Janie asks "Did marriage end the cosmic loneliness of the unmated? Did marriage compel love like the sun the day?"
2. Nanny arranges Janie's wedding ceremony.
3. Nanny laughs because she thought Janie was trying to tell her she was pregnant.
4. Janie wants Nanny to tell her how to love Logan.
5. Nanny means that the benefits of the marriage are greater than the work and sweat you must put into it.
6. Janie doesn't like "de way his head is long one way and so flat on de sides and dat pone uh fat back uh his neck." She also thinks "his belly is too big--toe nails look lak mule foots."
7. After Janie leaves Nanny prays to the Lord that she's done the best she could and that the rest is up to Him. She then falls over heavily on her bed.
8. A "bloom time, a green time, and an orange time refers to the seasons that Janie waited through after Nanny's death.
9. She tells the seeds that she hopes they fall on soft ground because she had heard the seeds saying that to one another.

Chapter 4
1. In the months that follow Nanny's death Logan begins to treat Janie differently by beginning to show a lack of interest in her.
2. After Logan threatens not to chop any wood for her Janie threatens to not cook any dinner for him.
3. Logan wants an extra mile because he wants to run two plows for the year.
4. Joe is a cityfied, stylish dressed man wearing his hat at an angle. His shirt has silk sleeveholders and his coat over his arm.
5. This quote implies that Joe carries himself as a white man and appears to be educated as one.
6. Joe wants Janie to shake her head because her "plentiful hair breaks lak day."
7. Janie means that Logan is focusing on her need for food in his hopes for her to return after leaving him.

5.Nanny is scared for Janie because she does not want her to be hurt.
6.Nanny wants Janie to marry logan because she thinks that it is the safest thing for her to do.
7.Nannys lover broke her heart.
8.Nanny ran away from her plantation because it was a horrible place where they would have killed her.
9.Janies father was a man that raped nanny repeatedly one night and reall hurt her.
10.Nanny calls herself a cracked plate because she has been through a lot and has a broken heart. she is also older and very fragile and you have to be very careful with her physically and emotionally.
11.Janie is compared to a tree because a tree is not restricted by walls, its free unlike a river and grows towards whatever it needs to survive and whatever it wants.
