Lige provides his proof by asking what the necessity of hair around a man's mouth and why a black hen lays a white egg.

7. Joe ruins the argument for Janie by telling her to go see what Mrs. Bogle wants. Janie wanted to hear how the argument ended but she obeyed Joe with dissatisfaction.
8. According to Joe, the difference between him and Janie is that he can think for himself but he also has to do the thinking for her because Janie is incapable of doing so.

Chapter 5

1. On the way to Eatonville, Joe buys Janie "all the best things the butcher had, like apples and a glass lantern full of candies."

2. When Joe and Janie first arrive in Eatonville, it is only a "raw place in the woods," only about 50 acres and with no mayor.

3. When Joe leaves town to buy land, Hicks stays behind to flirt with Janie.

4. When Hicks criticizes Janie, Coker respons by telling him that he doesn't stand a chance with Janie.

5. When Hicks hears that Joe is going to get a post office for the town, he gets irritated by the idea of black people running it.

6. During the party celebrating the opening of the store, Tony Taylor is upset at Lige Moss for interrupting his speech.

7. Joe celebrates the arrival of the street lamp by putting it on display for a week, and inviting the entire county to the lighting.

Chapter 6

1. Sam tells Matt that the women are down by the lake, using his mule as a washboard.

2. Before buying the old mule, Joe makes the men stop tormenting it.

3. Joe buys the mule from Matt for $5.

4. Sam and Lige argue over wether instinct or learned caution keeps a man from touching a hot stove.

5. Sam thinks that natural instinct tells a man not to touch a stove, because common sense, like everything else, is born out of nature. Lige thinks otherwise, and disproves Sam's belief that nature has made everything by saying that it hasn't made it possible to "ride uh butt-headed cow and hold on tuh de horns." Walter agrees, and says that caution is better than nature.

6. Jim and Dave are arguing over who loves Daisy more, each saying that they would do more than the other for her.

7. Joe ruined the argument for Janie by telling her to see what Mrs. Bogle wants.

8. Joe says that Janie, unlike himself, needs to be told what to do.

9. Joe pretends to be reading the paper when Mrs. Robbins walks up because he wants to get on her good side, but on his own terms.
